The second of EUMETSAT’s third generation of weather satellites, a Falcon 9 on the MTGS1 mission, launched at 5:04 p.m. from Kennedy Space Center Launch Pad 39-A.
Although there was only a 20% probability of favorable weather, the countdown continued, reaching the start of the 150-minute launch window, and the anticipated coastal rain danger did not materialize.
In addition to carrying two human spaceflights, Crew-9 and Fram2, and the Firefly Blue Ghost Mission 1, which successfully launched a lander to the moon, this was the ninth flight of the first-stage booster. On the droneship, it conducted a downrange recovery landing. Stationed in the Atlantic, just read the instructions.
The European satellite will use an infrared sounder to examine temperature and humidity profiles in order to sample the atmosphere at hyperspectral resolution.
The European Union’s Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission, which tracks particles and important air quality trace gases across Europe, is also aboard.
With all but three of them coming from SpaceX, this was the 57th launch from the Space Coast in 2025.
