WASHINGTON (AP) — In keeping with his earlier pledge, President Donald Trump is anticipated to sign an executive order on Monday that will lift U.S. sanctions on Syria.

The action was intended to help and advance the nation’s journey toward stability and peace, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. She declared that former President Bashar Assad, his associates, and others would continue to be subject to sanctions.

In an effort to fulfill the Republican president’s promise to remove 50 years of sanctions from a nation torn apart by 13 years of civil war, the United States gave Syria broad exemptions from sanctions in May.

In a significant change in U.S. policy toward Syria, Trump met with Ahmed al-Sharaa, the country’s temporary leader, in Saudi Arabia in May and promised to remove sanctions and look into repairing relations.

Leavitt stated on Monday that this is again another commitment made and fulfilled.

Additionally, the European Union has lifted almost all of the remaining sanctions on Syria.
