Los Angeles (AP) A court decided Wednesday to conduct a mental evaluation on a man accused of shooting an American Idol music supervisor and her husband dead in their Los Angeles home in order to assess his suitability for trial.
The 22-year-old Raymond Boodarian did not enter a plea and was scheduled to be arraigned in a Los Angeles courthouse. While a doctor assesses his competency, a judge halted the criminal proceedings against him.
Longtime American Idol producer Robin Kaye and her husband Thomas Deluca, both 70, were shot when they unexpectedly returned home during a burglary on July 10 and are charged with two charges of murder.
After reviewing the evaluation, a judge in a mental health court will choose whether Boodarian will go to trial or be admitted to a state institution.
In the courtroom’s custody area, Boodarian stood behind a window and seemed to make an effort to blend in.
The district attorney’s office did not immediately respond, and his lawyer declined to comment.
In the same small courthouse on Hollywood Boulevard where a guy accused of stalking Jennifer Aniston and ramming into her front gate was recently declared not fit to stand trial, Boodarian will go through the same evaluation.
Kaye and Deluca’s home in the Encino suburb of Los Angeles was broken into, according to the police, who reacted to a 911 call. According to the police, they left after finding no evidence of forced entry or other issues.

Officers doing a welfare check at the residence discovered the couple’s bodies four days later, shot to death. The next day, Boodarian was taken into custody.
In a subsequent community meeting, District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated that detectives think the couple came home unexpectedly when Boodarian was breaking and entering. Hochman claimed that after shooting them with their own firearm, he made his own 911 call.
At the time of her death, Kaye had been a member of American Idol for almost 15 years and was working on the next season of the popular singing competition television show.
