High court ruling on injunctions could imperil many court orders blocking the Trump administration
According to U.S. District Judge Loren Ali Khan, the injunction against Susman Godfrey’s firm was unlawful and needed to be blocked indefinitely.
The order was the most recent decision to reject Trump’s attempts to penalize law firms for hiring lawyers he views as his enemies and for doing legal work he dislikes.
According to the Susman Godfrey firm, it was partly to blame for Trump’s anger as it defended Dominion Voting Systems in the voting system company’s defamation case against Fox News for making misleading statements about the 2020 presidential election. A sizable compensation was reached in the lawsuit.
Similar rulings against the companies of Jenner Block, Perkins Coie, and WilmerHale have been blocked by other judges in recent weeks. Similar penalties, such as limiting access to federal buildings and suspending attorneys’ security clearances, have been attempted to be imposed by the orders.
The directive was part of a string of ones targeting companies that had adopted stances that President Trump didn’t agree with. Every court that has heard a challenge to one of these orders in the months that have followed has discovered serious constitutional infractions and permanently barred the order’s full enforcement, according to AliKhan. This court has now followed suit, finding that the order against Susman is unconstitutional and needs to be permanently enjoined.
By proactively reaching settlements that force them to collectively commit hundreds of millions of dollars in free legal services in support of causes the Trump administration claims to support, other large corporations have attempted to evade demands.
