Minkah Fitzpatrick, a Pro Bowl safety, and the Miami Dolphins reached an agreement on a new contract, but Fitzpatrick still wants more.
According to Fitzpatrick’s new agent Drew Rosenhaus, the two parties came to an arrangement on Sunday, the opening day of training camp for the Dolphins, and Fitzpatrick now has $16.245 million guaranteed from his current contract. The news was initially reported by ESPN on Sunday morning.
When Miami acquired the three-time All-Pro safety in exchange for cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith from the Pittsburgh Steelers, it inherited Fitzpatrick’s contract.
When Fitzpatrick returned to the Dolphins, who selected him in the first round of the 2018 draft and traded him to the Steelers in 2019, he retained Rosenhaus to negotiate the change since he had run out of guaranteed money on the contract.
Since Fitzpatrick’s contract did not include further years, his side still wants more work done. His current contract expires in 2026.
Rosenhaus stated, “As we continue to work with the Dolphins on a multi-year extension, we are comfortable with this commitment to Minkah.”
However, it benefits both parties in the near run. Fitzpatrick had $2 million of his 2026 salary shifted up a year to this next season, and the Dolphins reportedly cleared $11 million in cap space by converting a portion of his contract into a bonus, according to NFL Network. His 2025 and 2026 payments are now $17.5M and $15.6M, respectively.
Fitzpatrick participated fully in his first four practices after rejoining the Dolphins this past week at the team’s training camp thanks to negotiations. He was intercepted by backup quarterback Zach Wilson during a deep throw into traffic during Saturday’s practice.
