City leaders to discuss ongoing flooding concerns, solutions at Apopka lakes

APOPKA, Fla.

– Apopka leaders will meet Wednesday night to address ongoing flooding issues connected to two Apopka lakes, but some residents are frustrated as the city works to manage the problems.

Since late June, Apopka has been pumping excess water from Border Lake to other locations to reduce flooding. According to a city staff report, the water level reductions are progressing as expected.

If the lake levels can be lowered enough, staff says it should help residents affected by flooding near State Road 436 and Piedmont Wekiva Road. However, some residents feel the efforts are insufficient.

“I mean, we went to Puerto Rico for 10 days, and that thing has been running since a week before we went away, and it looks the same to me,” Francine Uva said. “I don’t think the pumping of the lake is working for us, but we’re on a hill.”

Wednesday night, city staff will provide an update on the pumping process and request more money from the city’s stormwater fund because they have run out of funds needed to rent the pumps until Aug. 31.

The council will also discuss Clear Water Lake, another flooding hotspot. They will explore long-term solutions, which could include charging the homeowner’s association for converting excess lake water into reclaimed water for lawn irrigation.
