Beijing (AP) Next month, the Chinese military will conduct a joint marine patrol with Russian forces and hold an annual naval drill, the military said Wednesday.
The Joint Sea 2025 drill will take place in the air and seas close to Vladivostok, a Russian port city located across the sea from Japan’s west coast, according to Defense Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Xiaogang. The practice was conducted in the South China Sea, off the coast of southern China, last year.

In recent years, the governments of China and Russia have strengthened their relationship, with China giving Russia an economic lifeline despite Western sanctions over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Last week, European leaders asked China once more to exert pressure on Russia to stop the war, which is already in its fourth year, but there was little indication that Beijing would comply.
In an annual study released earlier this month, Japan’s Defense Ministry stated that there are significant security concerns regarding China’s increasing military cooperation with Russia.
According to Zhang, the patrol and exercise are a part of a yearly cooperation plan and have nothing to do with the present state of affairs in the region or elsewhere.
He stated that the combined patrol in the Pacific would be the sixth of its sort, but he did not provide any dates.
During a monthly press conference, Zhang expressed disapproval of the U.S. Air Force’s current western Pacific exercises with Japan and other allies. The U.S. military claims that Resolute Force Pacific is the greatest contingency-response exercise the Air Force has ever carried out in the area.
Zhang claimed that the United States has been heedlessly showing off its power in the Asia-Pacific area and trying to use military exercises as a cover to band together, threaten, and coerce other nations, undermining regional peace and stability.
According to the Air Force, the exercise would teach its personnel how to remain prepared and carry out operations under pressure in order to show that they can protect the United States and its allies in the Pacific.
