According to a press release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Johnny Noviello, 49, passed away Monday afternoon at the Bureau of Prisons Federal Detention Center in Miami. An inquiry was underway to determine the cause of death.
According to officials, Noviello was being held pending his expulsion from the United States. He obtained a valid visa to enter the country in 1988, and in 1991 he was granted permanent residence. According to officials, he was given a one-year prison sentence after being found guilty of drug trafficking and other offenses in 2023.
Due to his narcotics conviction, Noviello was charged with removability when ICE officials picked him up at his probation office last month, according to authorities.
Eleven deaths were documented in 2024, and seven more immigration prisoners have died in government custody this year.
