Brazil’s former president Bolsonaro temporarily leaves house arrest for medical exams

SAO PAULOBrazil’s former president, Jair Bolsonar, momentarily departed his house arrest on Saturday to go to Brasilia for medical examinations after a judge gave him permission to stay at a hospital for six to eight hours.

Bolsonaro was evaluated for fever, cough, chronic gastric reflux, and hiccups, according to doctors at DF Star Hospital. Tests showed persisting gastritis and esophagitis, along with lingering symptoms of two previous lung infections. Later that day, he was released, and he would continue taking medication for his therapy.

Since being stabbed during a campaign event prior to the 2018 presidential election, he has been admitted to the hospital several times. In April, he underwent surgery to clear an intestinal obstruction.

Due to his purported attempt to stay in office after losing the 2022 election to President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro is currently on trial at the Supreme Court.Between September 2 and September 12, a five-justice panel is anticipated to render judgments and sentencing on five counts against him.

Bolsonaroden denies any misconduct.

Since August 5, the far-right leader has been under house arrest. Bolsonaro broke preventative procedures by disseminating content through his three politician sons, according to Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is in charge of the case.

Less than 20 people congregated outside DF Star hospital on Saturday, asserting that Bolsonaro is being persecuted for his political beliefs. Some expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump, who has referred to the case as a witch hunt and connected Bolsonaro’s legal issues to his decision to put a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports.
