ORLANDO, FL.A number of groups and merchants attended Saturday’s BLK JOY celebration in Orlando’s Parramore area despite a heat advisory that was in effect throughout Central Florida.
The Black Health Commission organized the event with the goal of uniting Black culture, community, wellness, and health in one location.
Freebies, including free produce, were distributed by organizations and businesses set up just outside Camping World Stadium starting at midday.
The event is in its fifth year. According to organizers, it has only become bigger over time.

Because it’s an intergenerational event with people as young as one walking around and people as old as seventy-something, it makes it accessible for people to one, be aware of the resources that are there, and actually get the information that they need. We have a kids’ zone, a moms’ zone, and something for everyone, said event organizer Rebecca Desir.
About 200 people attended the festival in its first year, according to organizers, while last year’s attendance was closer to 2,500.
