Following the announcement on Monday that Alexander Mattison would miss the season due to a neck injury, the Miami Dolphins promptly began the process of seeking a replacement running back.
According to a league source who confirmed an NFL Network report, Aaron Shampklin, who played in three regular-season games with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, is joining the Dolphins.
Although Shampklin, who stands 5’10” and weighs 195 pounds, would not be able to replace the 220-pound Mattison’s short-yardage ability, coach Mike McDaniel and the Dolphins could also rely on fellow tailbacks Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon II for power running to go along with speedy lead back De Von Achane.
In the Chicago Bears’ 24-24 preseason draw on Sunday, Mattison, Wright, and Gordon all scored touchdowns. On Miami’s first drive, however, Wright was stuffed at the 1-yard line on third and fourth and goal.
After colliding with his head during a catch and run during Sunday’s exhibition, Mattison will have neck surgery and miss the 2025 season.
Harvard alumnus Shampklin played in three games for the Steelers last season and had six carries for 17 yards. Despite the Dolphins’ dominance in the return game on Sunday at Soldier Field, he also had four kick returns, allowing him to contend for a special teams position.
Miami reportedly tried out heavy veteran Jamaal Williams, who led the league with 17 touchdowns in 2022, but Shampklin was selected Monday.
With only four tailbacks on the training camp roster and the necessity for running backs to chew up second-half carries in the upcoming preseason games against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions, the Dolphins may yet decide to add another tailback.
