Over the weekend, the National Hurricane Center started monitoring a system in the Caribbean that might make its way into the Gulf waters off Mexico and have the potential to become the second tropical depression or storm of the season.
According to the NHC’s 8 a.m. Friday tropical outlook, the area of showers and thunderstorms was in the northwest Caribbean Sea, close to Belize and the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. However, on Saturday or Sunday, it was predicted to move west-northwest into the Bay of Campeche in the southwestern Gulf waters, where a low pressure area might form.
Forecasters warned that if the system stays offshore of the Mexican coast, there may be further slow development on Sunday or Monday. Regardless of progress, the following three days might see locally severe precipitation across parts of Guatemala, Belize, and southeast Mexico.
On Thursday evening, the NHC started monitoring the system. In the next two days, it had a 10% probability of developing, and in the next seven, a 20% chance.

Tropical Storm Andrea, which formed for less than a day last week in the middle of the Atlantic, is the only storm to date in the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which officially began on June 1.
Barry is the next name on this season’s list.
It was the most recent named system to form since 2014. It wasn’t until June 30 of that year that the first storm was named.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration continues to forecast an above-normal hurricane season this year despite the late start.
Six to ten of the 13 to 19 named storms that the organization anticipates will turn into hurricanes. Of those, three to five would develop into powerful hurricanes with a maximum intensity of Category 3.
The hurricane season lasts until November 30.
