Washington (AP)On Friday, President Donald Trump reiterated his irrational assertion that the 2020 election was tainted by vast fraud and asked for the appointment of a special prosecutor to look into the election, which was won by Democrat Joe Biden.

The 2020 election was a complete fraud, and Biden was egregiously incompetent! In an attempt to positively compare his immigration enforcement strategy with the former president’s, Trump remarked in a social media post. The evidence is overwhelming and enormous. It is necessary to designate a Special Prosecutor. The United States of America must not permit this to occur once more! Now let’s get to work!

Trump’s post is part of a heightened attempt to discredit Biden’s administration, as his Republican White House is preoccupied with a very important foreign policy choice regarding whether to directly intervene in the Israel-Iran conflict. Trump ordered his staff to look into Biden’s conduct as president earlier this month, claiming that his predecessor’s cognitive impairment was concealed by advisers. Biden has called the probe a pointless diversion.

The post also resurrects Trump’s long-standing claim that the election was rigged, despite the fact that no evidence of fraud that might have influenced the result was found by courts nationwide or by a Trump attorney general during his first term. The cybersecurity division of the Department of Homeland Security declared the election to be the safest in American history.

Although it was unclear what Trump intended when he requested a special prosecutor, if Attorney General Pam Bondi complies, she might be under pressure to name a Senate-confirmed candidate. On Friday, a Justice Department spokesperson chose not to comment.

A series of special counsels have been appointed by the Justice Department in recent years, sometimes (though not always) drawn from outside the organization to oversee investigations into politically delicate topics, such as Biden and Trump’s actions.

The appointment of Jack Smith, the special counsel tasked with looking into Trump’s attempts to rig the 2020 presidential election and his retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, was aggressively and successfully challenged by Trump’s personal attorneys last year. A judge selected by Trump concurred, dismissing the lawsuit after finding that then-Attorney General Merrick Garland had gone too far in selecting a prosecutor without the Senate’s consent and confirmation.

Todd Blanche, who is currently the deputy attorney general, and Emil Bove, Blanche’s top deputy who was just nominated to be a judge on a federal appeals court, were part of that legal team.
